Happy Birthday, Little One!

Today is Peter's first birthday! Wow!!!!! Where on earth did the past year go? I feel like I'm saying that a lot these days.... :) Oh, well. I'm a mom; it's legal, right?

Here are some of the highlights from the past month:
  • Today I realized, at lunch, that he knows how to shake his head in a very emphatic "no". And he knows what it means! I discovered this as I was trying to feed him broccoli...
  • We had his birthday party last Saturday night. It was a small affair, as first birthdays are really for the adults more than they are for the kids, anyway, and plus, our apartment is too small to hold more than our immediate families, anyway! We had over: Luke's parents, my parents, my brothers: Brad & Kerri and Ben & Brittany. Lots of presents, attention and my, oh, my did he love his cake! At first he just was mushing it all up on his high chair tray until he realized he could eat it and after that first bite, the rest was history! See pictures below.
  • He spent his first Thanksgiving at Great-grandma Jo's house. He loved spending time with Great, great uncle Bud and meeting some of his second cousins.
  • He still loves Lucy. His favorite game to play with her is something sort of like fetch. Except that he's the one who fetches the ball and brings it back - to her. She gets a little annoyed and drops the ball and walks away. He is not deterred, though. He keeps bringing it back and shoving it into her mouth over and over and over and over.....that ball belongs in her mouth, after all!
  • Loves to say the "s" sound. Especially when I'm counting as I snap up his clothes after a diaper change. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, etc. When I get to 6 and 7, he mimics the "s" sound.
  • He likes to mimic much of what we say and some of what we do. He doesn't know what he is saying yet, though. Except for the shaking head no thing. Last night at the dinner table, Luke had his face resting on his hand and his other hand running through his hair. Pretty soon, Peter was doing the same thing. It was so funny!
  • He is fully weaned.
  • Within a week or so, four more teeth popped through! The two on the bottom on either side of the middle two teeth and two upper molars. Wow! He went from 6 to 10 teeth in a matter of days!
  • He is not walking on his own yet, but loves to hang onto hands or furniture and cruise around. Soon enough he'll figure it out.
  • He took his first tumble down some stairs at Grandma and Grandpa's house on their basement stairs. I would like to blame them, but alas, it was all me! I was in the bathroom...
  • We had weaned him to cow's milk a week or so ago, but I don't think his body is quite ready, so we'll wait a bit longer and try it again.
  • And the most exciting news of all, is that Peter will be a big brother in about 6 months! Yeah!! And so if you've taken the time to read all of this stuff that really only parents care about, it has now been worth it. Unless you already knew. Then it didn't matter. :)
Pictures!

Well, the pictures are in the wrong order, again. Bear with me! Here he is playing fetch with his beloved Lucy.

Sideways picture of his cake decorated by his very own cake decorator. Me!

He apparently liked the burritos we made for his birthday party dinner.

Above and below: note the Mountain Dew bottle he is clutching. Thanks, Brad! That was his favorite toy!

Happy Birthday singing time!

At first, he wasn't sure what to do with the cake...

But he didn't take too long to figure it out!
Yummy!

One year pictures at Lisa's! Thanks, Lisa!

He just woke up. Wasn't in the mood for pictures, I guess. :)

One of his favorite toys at Grandma's house. I think it was mine. It's a little wind up "radio" that plays "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" over and over...

Cute family shot at Stephen and Suzy's wedding in October.

He loves riding on daddy's shoulders!

Stephen and Suzy!

Awww....

This is typically Lucy's hangout spot during meals. Wonder why? :)

This was my rocking chair when I was young...

Peter and his trusty steed, Lucy.

Thanksgiving day - Uncle Bud. Peter really likes him!

Peter and Grandma Willing!

Great-grandma Jo and three of the great-grandkids on Thanksgiving day.

11 Months - late!

Quick rundown of the 11 month note-worthy things since I never got around to it then...oops, again! :)

  • He started to mimic sounds/words, although he didn't have a clue what he was saying. Some of them were: uh-uh (as in no-no), juice, and he made a growl sound (when Luke did)
  • Discovered at Wal Mart that if he shrieked (ah!), it would echo throughout the whole store. And so he did it over and over again, much to his delight and my dismay.
  • On 11/15, he enjoyed watching "Toy Story" for the first time ever. Well, the first 40 minutes of it anyway. Then he got bored.
  • He had something similar to the infamous swine flu. Was it or wasn't it? Since I didn't take him, we will probably never really know, but he was pretty sick for a week. Got it a half hour after Luke left to go deer hunting. Of course. Sigh...
  • He was really into closing doors for a while. If he saw one that was open, he would crawl over and push it shut until he heard the click.
  • He loves the slide at our apartment building.
  • One day as I was doing laundry at my parents' house, he was babbling away to me in the other room. Suddenly I realized that I couldn't hear him anymore, so I went in search of him. High and low...couldn't find him, but every once in a while I could hear him! Odd!!! So I finally went upstairs to my brother's Ben's room, and there he was. Ben thought I had brought him up and I thought Ben must have brought him up. Unbeknownst (sp?) to us, he crawled up all on his own! Oops! I didn't know he could do that!!!
  • Tooth #6 was, at 11 months, almost in.
  • He loves bananas. LOVES them. Will eat like a regular adult. Wow.

10 months!

One of these days I will really get creative with my title. Then everyone will be so shocked that no one will really know what to do. So until then, I'll spare you all the sudden shock. I wouldn't want to cause any heart attacks or anything!

Peter, my little baby, is just growing and growing and growing. I really can't believe how quickly the time flies and how big babies can get so...quickly! I was taking a walk down memory lane the other day to a day in the not so distant past...that snowy December day last winter when Peter finally came. The past 10 months have just flown by.

This past month, Peter has started mimicking more sophisticated things that we do. For example, he and Luke were looking in a mirror and Luke stuck out his tongue at Peter. After a few attempts and giggles, Peter finally figured it out and stuck his back out at Luke.

He has really gotten his fake almost courtesy-ish laugh down pretty well. Just about anything will bring it on, too!

He now points at things.

He LOVES to watch the pictures change on our digital picture frame. He typically laughs at all the pictures of himself. He also likes to watch videos of himself...he likes to laugh at those, too!

He has 5 teeth! The fifth one came through two weeks and two days ago. That was a Wednesday...whatever date that was two weeks ago from today. I don't have a calendar right in front of me. I'd have to get up and walk to the kitchen. :) I think tooth #6 is working its way through, too.

He loves to eat!

He would eat yogurt at every meal if I'd let him. It's probably his favorite food, next to Cheerios, of course.

He has been to two more weddings in his little life with one more this coming Sunday! That's way more weddings than Luke had ever been to before he met and married me! :)

Peter is now fully crawling on all fours. Sometimes he gets going so fast and excitedly that he falls to his stomach, but he always gets back up to his knees. Sometimes it's still faster for him to use his forearms vs. hands, so he still looks like he's doing the army crawl sometimes.

He loves standing and will do so hanging onto whatever happens to be nearby...mom's leg, laundry basket (which often tips over as soon as he grabs it), kitchen chair, wall, dishwasher, dresser, Lucy (while she's eating!), coffee table, toilet...he's also had his first several bruises on his head due to this new obsession. Two days in a row he fell while hanging onto the toilet (I scrub the thing weekly and the seat AND lid are ALWAYS down. When not being used, of course, but then he wouldn't be hanging onto it...anyway...) and smacked his face on the floor or the cabinet in the bathroom or something. Ouch.

I gave him his first (well, actually second) haircut on Tuesday morning. It was getting sooo long and shaggy on the sides. If he had cute wavy or curly hair the shaggyness would be cute. But when it's stick-straight like mine and Luke's is, shaggy is not so cute. So I gave him a little trim and stuck the trimmings into a ziploc for safekeeping. Unfortunately, 10-month-olds are pretty wiggly...and so parts of it definitely look like someone (perhaps a young child?) took a scissors and just went "CHOP!" to his hair. Oh, well. It'll grow back!

Well, sadly enough, I cannot remember any more of the things I kept thinking of since his official 10-month mark on the 15th and thought, "I have to remember to write that in my blog!" So, I guess as I rememer them, I will add them. Bummer. Sorry Peter...

Picture time!
One of these days he is going to crawl to the edge of our bed, fall off of it and land on his head. He has no fear of such things.

September wedding - Cory and Mandy. Such a beautiful outside wedding!

Father-son bonding outside. I snuck this shot through the window. :)

We had a fun visit one day from my friend and former roommate from Rochester, Sarah! It was so good to see her again, and she finally got to meet Peter!

Peter is rather taken with Lucy and anything belonging to her...lately it's been her kennel. He worked for days at trying to climb over the little bar thing at the bottom of the opening so he could get in. This day he finally got it and oh, my was he proud! Lucy, on the other hand, didn't seem too thrilled.

His other great joy is getting into our TV cabinet and pulling out alllllll the movies.

We also had a fun surprise visit from my life-long friend, Rochelle and her youngest, Eli. Peter and I picked them up from the airport and drove them up to St. Cloud. She was in town for a very short visit (21 hours?) to see her brother and sister-in-law's group perform at a local Christian radio station's version of "American Idol". They did very well!

And here we are with Peter.

The day of Jeff and Denise's wedding, it snowed! 39 years ago on the day her parents got married (also October 10th), it snowed, too! Anyway, Peter needed to have his picture taken in this year's first snow. So adorable.

Newlyweds, Jeff and Denise. Congratulations!

Here's a picture of him after the haircut. Not too bad, I don't think!

I know there's food all over his face, but I just love this shot. He's just so...sweet.

I have finally figured out how to keep Peter occupied while I'm getting my make-up on and hair dried in the morning. Stick him in the sink and give him a hairbrush and the clock! This will only work, of course, until he figures out how to turn on the water.

Awwww....what a ham!

Corrections and Additions

I was just reading my last post and thought I'd correct a couple things and update on others. We new parents get so excited about things sometimes, don't we?

Peter's mystery fever never did show anything at Children's Hospital - at least they never called us with anything. I assume that means all is well! He happily has those four teeth now and seems to be starting to work on a couple others. Oh, boy, here we go again.

We gave him some hamburger to eat one night - hamburger chunks off of our pizza - and he loved it. But since then, although he seemed to have no adverse effects from it - I learned that red meat is one of those potential allergens and so we're being a little more careful with it. We're trying to stick mainly with chicken for now. The other day, I made white chicken chili and tossed some into the blender for him. He practically inhaled it and wanted more. So I blended up more knowing that he'd have leftovers for lunch the next day. Unfortunately there wasn't as much as he wanted for lunch the next day. Boy was he mad when it was gone! Madder than a wet hen, even! :)

We are contemplating a couple road trips this winter. It would be so fun if we were able to go on both; Peter would be able to see (as if he'd remember!) many different states. Well, we'll just have to see...I won't delve into details unless we actually decide to go. That way I won't be bummed as much if we don't get to go.

Here's a couple new pictures:

This is a super sweet picture of me...doing what I do every day at work. Ha! Funny what a hard hat, safety glasses, reflective vest and a wide-angle lens DOESN'T do for me, isn't it?

Peter and Grandpa Prigge. Thanks for taking this, reh!

On Tuesday morning after Bible study at Christina's house, she took a couple pictures of Peter while I ran an errand. What a goof!

Summer's End

We had such a busy and exciting summer, I never got around to writing when Peter hit 8 months! Oh, well. He'll be 9 months on Tuesday so I decided today is a good day to do some blogging.

Today, I think instead of trying to remember everything and then sticking all the pictures at the end, I'll use the pictures to help me remember it all. You'd think that as a good mommy I'd write every last thing down. :)

Peter and Jackson are growing like little weeds - Jackson is almost 10 months old already! The boys will both be one before we know it. Wow!!!!!

Lest you think we were trying to pose them perfectly, we weren't! They are just that cooperative and love the camera!

At the end of July, we were able to visit with my aunt JoAnne and uncle Pat who are missionaries in Vienna. They both work at a Christian school there - Vienna Christian School. The staff are all (I think all, anyway - you guys can correct me if I'm wrong!) unpaid by the school and fully funded as missionaries. It's a very unique school full of opportunities to serve the Lord. It was wonderful to visit with them when they were back in the States for a little while - and they finally got to meet Peter!

Peter, as he is getting a little older now, definitely knows who his daddy is and gets excited to see him every day.

Peter loves to show off his standing skills whenever he can. :)

Still loves looking at that book!

While hanging out at Grandpa and Grandma Willing's house in early August, he got to try some sweet corn. I know, I know, it's a potential allergen for babies; I didn't know that at the time. He had fun wielding it as a sword more than anything, though. It was one of his first tastes of real food. As much as he normally sticks everything into his mouth, I'm not sure he really knew what to do with the corn.

Around 8 months, I began having some issues nursing him and after visiting a lactation consultant and caving to the peer pressure all around me, we started Peter on solids. His first bites (after licking the sweet corn, of course) were of sweet potatoes, then squash an then carrots. He loves them all, mostly. Carrots he'd be perfectly content without. We also tried yogurt, which he loves. Spitting continutes to be one of his favorite activities.

Hamming it up for the camera on mommy and daddy's bed one day. I thought the white of our bedding/walls and his brightly colored clothes would make for great pictures. I didn't count on having Luke's arm in the pictures, though! Neither did I count on the camera being too slow to get the actual smiles...but he's just so adorable nevertheless.

I just love his little fingers.

He takes food pretty seriously.

Daddy's helper.

See what I mean? He LOVES his dad! Oh, and can you see his top tooth? He had that lone top tooth for just over a month before the second top tooth finally came in. It was so cute! But, more on that horrid second top tooth adventure later...

Peter is definitely mobile now, but only when he wants to be. He's not all out crawling on all fours, but he's got a pretty good army crawl down. He wiggled his way under his bed and thought it was pretty funny when I found him. He must have found that Nuk under there, too. They are always falling out of his crib and onto the floor! I keep 1-2 spares on hand at all times...I'm not about to get down on the floor in the middle of the night to search for it when it falls!

Remember I said we were going camping? Well......we did it. And survived. It was an adventure, to be sure! Not one I'd like to repeat too soon, though! We went up near Duluth to Spirit Mountain Campground with my brother Brad and his wife Kerri. We had a walk-in site near other sites (with loud but very nice people). Being in a tent out in the wilderness was super fun, I will admit that. Having a baby along was the tricky part.

The first night, we didn't set up the pack n play, but just made a little bed on the floor near our mattress. He moves so much during the night that he kept scooting off of his bed and onto the hard cold plastic floor of our tent. He woke up (after FINALLY falling asleep!) every time he moved off of it. I think he ended up in bed with us around midnight (so I guess he spent about two hours on his own bed). This is a picture of Peter and I around 6:00am the next morning. It was a long night, but things could only get better from here, right? I was pretty upbeat. We set up the pack n play that morning and Peter took a good morning nap in it. Fwew.

That day we drove to Gooseberry Falls State Park (along with everyone else up there, I think) and spent the afternoon picnicing, hiking and taking pictures.

The scenery was just breathtaking!

And Peter loved riding in his backpack carrier. Actually, he spent a good part of his waking hours in it! Thanks Kyle and Laurie!

Yep, there we are, looking cute!

Aren't the falls magnificient? It is at times like these that I feel sooo small in comparison to the great and amazing things God has done and created.

Peter and Luke were getting ready to go. It was naptime.

But there were so many pictures left to take! :) Peter and his beloved Auntie Kerri.

Saturday night, Peter went to bed at 7:45 or so and fell asleep after I held him for a while. He was pretty tired. It was going to be a good night, I was sure of it. Things didn't quite work out that way, though. He woke up around 1:30, I nursed him as I didn't want to wake up everyone else, and put him back to bed. Fifteen minutes later he woke up again and started wailing. I quickly got him up and realized (now that I was a little more awake) that he felt awfully warm. Not sweaty, but WARM. He stayed in bed with us the rest of the night. He and I got up around 6:00 again and after visiting the bathroom and putting in my contacts, we drove into Duluth to Caribou. This was going to be a long day, I was sure. And after getting another crummy night of sleep, we needed some extra help! I love Chai Tea Lattes....
I took his temp when we got back, and sure enough, he had a fever of 102. Yikes! Tooth #4 (the second top tooth) was really taking a toll....and his gums were so swollen, it looked like he had a pink tooth. Literally. It looked awful.
Our church was having a youth retreat that weekend, as well, and so we were hoping to join them on Sunday for the day. We missed Sunday morning as Peter needed to nap (shockingly enough), but made it in time for lunch at Old Country Buffet! It was really, really, REALLY good food, but we had to leave before I could get some soft serve ice cream (rats!), as Peter needed a nap yet again. Normally we wouldn't be so controlled by our son's need for sleep, but this weekend was different. Fever, constipation, new tooth trying to come in, little sleep??? We let him nap whenever he needed it!
As soon as we climbed into our borrowed minivan (fun!), Peter was out, so we took a drive up the scenic route to Two Harbors. On our way back, he woke up and we stopped at a scenic overlook on Lake Superior, climbed down the steep incline (don't know how I did all that hiking with my flimsy pink flip-flops!) and took some pictures. The one above and the one below are from this stop.

It was a beautiful day!

On our way back to Park Point in Duluth to meet up with Brad, Kerri and the retreat, we stopped at Canal Park in Duluth and took a stroll. Can you see the tiredness and slight stress etching Luke's face? Mine was nicely covered by my sunglasses. I love those things.

Sunday night was no better than the previous two nights, and so we decided at 2am that as soon as the sun came up, we were packing up and heading home. Which is exactly what we did! We all packed up and then stopped at Country Kitchen with Brad and Kerri for breakfast before heading out. Peter was, despite feeling a litte warm, totally hamming it up with the ladies at the table behind us. It was nice to have him in such a good mood! One thing that didn't change, though was his appetite. He ate and ate and ate...all weekend long! And although we were definitely short on sleep all weekend, and Peter was feeling out of sorts, as you can see from the pictures, we did have a splendid time. We were just tired. And Peter was very crabby towards the end of the trip. :)

When we got home, I checked our crying and very hot baby's temperature to discover that he had a 104 temp. Sigh....so I called the nurseline after bathing him and getting him down for a nap. The nurse I talked with said that we really needed to have him seen because of the fever he'd had since Saturday night. So, we drove to the nearest open Urgent Care where they swabbed his little nose and pricked his finger and he wailed the entire time we were there. No influenza, white blood cell count good. No clue why he has a fever. Go to Children's in Minneapolis. We'll call ahead for you.

Against Luke's (and mine, too) better judgement, we drove down to Minneapolis to Children's. They did a catheter to do a urine test to check for a kidney or bladder infection and drew blood. Both things were unpleasant, but it was definitely the blood drawing that almost pushed us over the edge. The poor nurses who were sent in to draw it couldn't get the needle to go into his vein and they had to try two different spots. No luck. Our baby was screaming, I started crying (again, man I was tired), and Luke was doing his best to stay calm. Finally a lab tech came down and on the first, and far less painful try was able to get the vein and got the sample he needed.

Nothing has shown up as being unusual yet, although it hasn't been two weeks yet, I guess. But, even though all the experts say that teething doesn't cause fevers, I'm willing to say otherwise. Or at least the sores on the gums from the teeth trying to break through are potentially places for germs to breed and cause infection.....ironically enough, the next day his tooth popped through. And his fever was gone. And here he is below, happy to be fever-free, needle-free, home and with his best friend, Lucy.

And now he has four teeth!

I guess all parents have to have these sorts of experiences. It's what makes us grow and become wiser, right?

Peter can now eat:
  • sweet potatoes
  • carrots
  • squash
  • green beans
  • chicken
  • yogurt
  • Ritz crackers
  • graham crackers
  • bananas
  • pears
  • applesauce
  • oatmeal...if he's in the mood
  • toast
  • hamburger
We also put many things through the baby food grinder. Some of the above mentioned items make it through.

He also knows how to go from laying down to sitting up and sitting up to laying down. (or is it lying?)

He can make little kissing sounds.

He loves looking at books. Especially books with flaps. He loves opening them.

He has learned how to shriek and works hard all day long to perfect it! :)
